Five harvesting strategies are compared, according to their effect upon the expected discounted yield, the coefficient of variation of the yield, and the expected time to reach 10% of carrying capacity. This comparison is carried out for three laws for population dynamics: the Beverton-Holt model, the logistic model, and the Pella-Tomlinson model. Substantial differences between the strategies appear for high levels of random fluctuation in the harvested population. It is shown how methods of stochastic control theory can be used to devise and improve harvesting strategies.
