DIURNAL VARIATION IN PHOTOSYNTHETIC ACTIVITY OF NATURAL PHYTOPLANKTON POPULATIONS

A study of fluctuations in potential photosynthesis in natural algal populations was undertaken at one geographical location over several months. The effect of seasons, i.e, daylength, proved to be the most significant factor modifying potential photosynthesis. Values of Pmax/Pmin, the daily range of fluctuation, varied from approximately 1 in December 1960 to a maximum of 9 during August 1961. Probable causes of the variation and its effect on productivity measurements are discussed.
