Abstract Vinylogous series of carotenoic acids and the corresponding esters have been synthesized from the B‐apo‐carotenals by the WITTIG reaction. By comparison with the synthetic material the structure of torularhodin from torula yeast was shown to be that of 3′, 4′‐dehydro‐18′‐y‐carotenoic acid.
