Immunofluorescence localization of thyroglobulin in metastatic thyroid cancer

Thyroglobulin was demonstrated by immunofluorescence microscopy in five metastatic tumors suspected of being of thyroid origin but in none of 11 malignant tumors from other sites. The antigen was localized in the cytoplasm and in the extracellular space adjacent to tumor cells and there was considerable variation in the amount of thyroglobulin within and among tumors. Thyroglobulin localization confirmed that the tumors were of thyroid origin and was a valuable supplement to the histologic and laboratory evaluation of patients with thyroid cancer.
