Multiple sclerosis is about the only disease left whose identity cannot be confirmed by some kind of laboratory test. It requires careful bedside study by one with broad experience in neurological diseases to diagnose the early case with certainty. Thus, needing all the help we can get, we welcome this book as an authoritative compendium of data and the authors' experience. It is rooted in a previous book by McAlpine, Compston, and Lumsden published eleven years earlier, but it is far more than a revision of the same. Supported by extensive citations of important contributions by others, it is the only reliable compendium of what is known today about multiple sclerosis.
