For years and through two editions, Tietz'sFundamentals of Clinical Chemistryserved as one of the major references in the field. In 1986, a closely related book, the first edition ofTextbook of Clinical Chemistry, was published, followed by the third edition ofFundamentals of Clinical Chemistryin 1987. The major difference between these two versions—TextbookandFundamentals—lies in the discussion of pathophysiology found inTextbook, whileFundamentalsretained a more analytical laboratory- and methods-oriented approach. Eight years later and with the second edition of theTextbook, Dr Tietz has passed his editorship to two new and very capable successors. Although a good number of the chapter authors have changed, the book retains many of its important characteristics. In the new edition ofTextbook, the editors have made some minor revisions in organization. The 20 chapters of the previous edition have been expanded to 41, and the book
