Gentrification and Displacement of the Elderly: An Empirical Analysis

The resettlement of inner-city neighborhoods by a younger, wealthier, better-educated elite is believed to represent a threat of displacement to elderly residents. This article analyses mid- and late-1970's census tract data from nine cities to assess residential mobility trends. Net inmigration of professionals is found to be more likely in tracts with high proportions of retired households and, especially in tracts close to the cities' central business districts, professional inmigration is associated with outmigration of retired households.
