Withdrawal of N and P from senescing leaves to perennial tissues of trees in northern hardwood forest ecosystems contributes substantially to the annual requirements of the biota and to tight nutrient cycles. After clearcutting, these rapidly regrowing forests can return resorption to pre-existing levels in as little as five years.
