Characteristics of antennas mounted on portable equipment near the human body are analyzed using the FD-TD method in order to elucidate the effects of the human body on the antennas. The analysis model consists of a human body model and an antenna mounted on a conducting box. The human body model is composed of human head and hand models. It is confirmed from a comparison between calculated and measured results that the characteristics of the antennas mounted on portable equipment can be analyzed accurately by considering the effects of the human body model. Using this model, the characteristics of a λ/4 monopole antenna and a planar inverted-F antenna in the frequency bands of cellular phones and personal handy phones are calculated. The calculated results using the human body model indicate that the radiation efficiency decreases below 45%. It is found that the radiation efficiency varies significantly according to the shape of the human head model and the distance between the antenna elements and the human hand model, and that the effects of the human body model differ for the two antenna types. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
