The term congenital unilateral multicystic kidney was first proposed in 1936 by Schwartz,1who described the condition in a 7-month-old infant. In 1955 Spence2reviewed 15 cases of this abnormality and added 4 of his own. Coppridge and Ratliff3reported 2 cases in 1958, bringing to 33 the total recorded cases.2-12This relatively small number perhaps is not indicative of the actual frequency of the disorder as adduced from the observations of Longino and Martin.13To ascertain the nature and frequency of abdominal masses found on the first day of life these workers reviewed the admissions to the Children's Hospital of Boston for a 20-year period and found 32 infants to have an abdominal mass. On surgical exploration 13 of these masses were due to a unilateral hypoplastic multicystic kidney. At autopsy two other infants were found to have bilateral involvement.
