Glucagon-Induced Hypocalcemia in Man

Glucagon was administered intravenously over a 4-hr period to each of 7 normal subjects and 11 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. A significant fall in the serum calcium averaging 0.43 and 0.69 mg/100 ml was observed in the normal subjects and patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, respectively. In both normal and hyperparathyroidism subjects, this fall in serum calcium could not be accounted for by enhanced renal calcium excretion.
