An interesting by-product of the study of the female sex hormones was the observation that substances capable of initiating estrus in the castrated female mouse could be obtained from certain plant tissues as well as from the reproductive and other tissues of animals. Following the introduction by Allen and Doisy (1923) of the vaginal smear method of testing for the presence of estrogenic material, Loewe, Lange and Spohr (1927) investigated several flowering plants, with positive results. Fellner (1926) reported an active extract from grains of rice and wheat. Using their chromaphil reaction as a test method, in addition to uterine growth and the vaginal smear, Dohrn, Faure, Poll and Blotevogel (1926) obtained positive results with a group of plant materials, including beet seeds, potatoes and yeast. Glimm and Wadehn (1928) made a thorough investigation of yeast extracts, from both brewer's and compressed yeast, with positive results.
