A statistical view of a class of water quality indices

Water quality indices are treated as random variables; the class of quality ‘averaging’ indices is examined and several statistics are derived. It is seen that the probability density functions of the water quality constituents as well as the structure of the transform functions (rating curves) influence the ability of indices to measure policy performance.
