A survey of recent soliton ideas and applications in condensed matter physics is given. Central unifying themes are suggested based on the dual techniques of nonlinear mathematics and topology. Applications introduced include statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, low-dimensional electronic and magnetic systems and interfacial profiles.
