ABSTRACT THE unit-to-unit manufacturing variation in emission devices is an important factor influencing the emission uniformity of a trickle irrigation system. Emitter manufacturing variation must be considered when selecting an emitter for a system, and when designing the system to meet predetermined efficiency goals. The design of the emitter, the materials used in its construction, and the care with which it is manufactured determine the amount of variation to be expected from any particular model of emitter. The Coefficient of Manufacturing Variation, v, is recommended as the appropriate numerical measure of unit-to-unit consistency in emitters. Values of the coefficient for several emitters are given. Emission rate distributions are shown for typical trickle systems, and are evaluated according to a water storage efficiency concept.
