Cerebral Lipids in a Case with a Clinically Silent Isolated Plaque of the Multiple Sclerosis Type

The cerebral lipid composition has been investigated in apparently normal white and grey matters from a brain bearing an isolated plaque of the MS type. When compared with control cases the investigated brain showed reduced content of sphingomyelin and differences in the fatty acid compositions of the phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidylethanolamine fractions. Cholesteryl esters were also present. The results are discussed with respect to the problem of predemyelinating brain chemistry in multiple sclerosis.
