Determinants of Susceptibility to Experimental Enterococcal Pyelonephritis

The incidence of parenchymal renal infection after the hematogenous administration of enterococci was ascertained in the rat during several experimental conditions (spontaneous antidiuresis, water deprivation plus oral loading with acid or alkali, water-loading alone, and water-loading plus oral acid or alkali). Differences in the incidence of infection were related to the presence or absence of volume contraction (or some function thereof), or variations of medullary tonicity and/or ammonia concentration in similarly treated but nonchallenged control rats.
