The biological response to extreme temperatures and \nsalinities is investigated in the laboratory for seven \nspecies of planktonic foraminifera: Globigerinoides \nsacculi/er (Brady), Globigerinoides ruber (d'Orbigny), \nGlobigerinoides conglobatus (Brady), Globigerine/la siphonifera \n(d'Orbigny), Orbulina universa d'Orbigny, \nNeogloboquadrina dutertrei (d'Orbigny) and Globorotalia \nmenardii (d'Orbigny). When one of the vital processes, \nfood acceptance, growth or reproduction is inhibited \nby a culture variable, the absolute survival limit \nis reached. The measured in vitro temperature ranges \ncompare well with the global temperature distribution \npatterns of these species, suggesting that this parameter \nplays a major role in their biogeographical distribution. \nThe salinity ranges that are tolerated in laboratory \ncultures exceed the range encountered in modern oceans. \nThus salinity does not limit the distribution of the \nspecies investigated herein. \nIn general, larger mean final shell sizes are attained \nand the total shell length increase is larger at optimum \ntemperatures and salinities than at extreme culture conditions, \nbut the differences were not always statistically \nsignificant. Marginal temperature and salinity conditions \ndo not induce contained growth in expatriated \nspecimens. \nUnder extreme culture conditions, the relative frequency \nof the different shell morphologies is altered \nrelative to normal conditions. "Abnormal" phenotypes...
