ABSTRACT Absorption of fluoride (F) from ingested toothpastes was studied in rats, in adult humans and to some extent in children. The parameters analyzed were mainly 4‐hour unabsorbed F in the rats and 9‐hour urinary excretion in the humans. Five commercial and four experimental preparations were tested. The results indicate that the polishing agents calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate prevent a considerable fraction of the F content from being absorbed, whether this is present as F‐ or PO3F– ions. Polishing agents that are inert towards F do not appear to inhibit the F absorption, but the high bicarbonate content of one toothpaste may exert some inhibition by its osmosis.
