Serological relationships of endoplasm antigens of saprophytic mycobacteria

Endoplasms prepared from 76 strains of saprophytic mycobacteria (Runyon's group IV), were tested with 25 antiendoplasm sera by an immunodiffusion method. Endoplasms of 88% of the relatively closely related strains possessed one to four major antigenic factors. The endoplasms of the remaining 12% of strains contained one of two common antigenic factors, which were different from the major factors. Thirteen endoplasm serotypes were distinguished by the patterns of the serological reactions with six selected "standard" antisera.
