A versatile bacterial weapon that can deliver harmful proteins directly into host cells has recently turned up in a wide range of pathogens. Called the type III secretion system, this biochemical launch pad can sidestep host defenses, and it helps cause diseases ranging from bubonic plague to tree blight.
