1. A history of fire incidents in tunnels

According to French, German, Swiss and Italian statistics, this paper describes how accidents seem to occur less frequently in tunnels than on the open road. Yet there is no doubt that the consequences of a fire in a tunnel can be far more serious than the consequences of a fire in the open air. On the basis of the statistics presented in the paper it has been estimated that there will be between one and three very serious (i.e. involving multiple vehicles and fatalities) out of every thousand HGVs per km of tunnel. This is a serious problem that has the potential of getting much worse in the future as more and longer tunnels are constructed and traffic densities are increasing. Several papers in the book deal directly with issues relating to the fire safety of tunnels in the future, however this paper looks to the past to see what can be learned from the fire incidents that have already occurred in tunnels.
