Abstract The alcohol soluble substances of acid-fast bacteria have been found to possess the following properties: (a) They fix antibodies produced with tubercle bacilli (Citron and Klinkert (1)); (b) they incite weak antibody formation when injected into normal animals (K. Meyer (2)). Immune sera produced with “lipoids” of the tubercle bacilli do not react with the extracted bacilli (K. Meyer (2, 3)), or with the protein fractions obtained from tubercle bacilli (Dienes and Schoenheit (7)). Thiele and Embleton (4) obtained strong group reactions with immune sera prepared with various fractions of the tubercle bacilli but the homologous fraction reacted better than the heterologous fractions. (c) The “lipoids” of mycobacteria differ from “lipoids” obtained from other organisms and from “lipoids” obtained from animal tissues (K. Meyer (2), Negre and Boquet (5, 6), Dienes (8) and others). However, by these studies very little specificity was demonstrated among the “lipoids” obtained from various mycobacteria.
